Caltech Hosts Workshop on Data Centers and Community Impact for Local Leaders

tech

According to Caltech News, the university recently brought together local leaders with research on how artificial intelligence data centers impact California communities. Cities are facing data center proposals with little state or federal guidance and are navigating the decisions largely on their own. The research reveals several concerns. Data centers consume massive amounts of electricity — projected to reach twelve percent of all US electricity by twenty twenty-eight — and can increase power-outage risk and drive up local utility rates. The ten counties experiencing the most significant health impacts are in low-income areas. A recent case in Monterey Park illustrates the tension. A data center proposal was sited just sixty-five feet from homes — far below the standard fifteen-hundred-foot setback. Residents voted eighty-six percent in favor of restricting data centers. But solutions exist. Data centers that deploy on-site energy storage instead of diesel generators could eliminate direct health impacts. Demand response, adaptive cooling, and waste-heat utilization could turn data centers from infrastructure burdens into community partners. Caltech is positioning itself as a research resource to help local governments navigate these decisions.
