See the Southern Lights from Space in New ISS Video
science
According to Nautilus, NASA astronaut Meir aboard the International Space Station captured video of the aurora australis—Earth's southern lights. The phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with the planet's magnetic field and upper atmosphere, creating ribbons of colored light. From low Earth orbit, roughly three hundred miles up, astronauts get a perspective of this cosmic light show that's available to only a privileged few.
