Full Body VR Tracking Is Just Some Recycled Hardware Away

tech

Hackaday reports on a DIY project that turns old Vive controllers into full-body VR trackers. Developer Jaki created a firmware modification and custom mount to repurpose controllers that already contain all the necessary sensors, transforming them into perfectly functional body tracking devices. The project also includes the Viva Dongle—a five-dollar wireless receiver that uses a Pro Micro NRF52840 microcontroller. It's a budget alternative to official hardware. A Python program with a graphical interface makes firmware flashing simple for users of any skill level. With these tools and a three-D printer, anyone can add full-body tracking to VRChat and modded games using recycled hardware.
