UK withdraws millions in funding from world’s second-largest rainforest in Congo
world
The UK has withdrawn funding from major rainforest conservation projects it promised at COP26 in Glasgow. The government had committed two hundred million pounds to protect the Congo basin, the world's largest forested carbon sink. But per Carbon Brief, by 2024 the UK had only spent thirty-nine point eight million toward that pledge. Broad cuts to overseas aid, redirected to defense spending, have forced the cancellation of major conservation programs. The Congo Basin Forest Action Programme saw its budget slashed from ninety million pounds down to just eighteen point eight million. UK government assessments warn that degradation of this rainforest threatens national security and prosperity.
