NASA Uses Subscale Aircraft to Accelerate Flight Innovation

NASA News reports that the Armstrong Flight Research Center uses small, remotely piloted aircraft as cost-effective platforms to test and mature aerospace innovations before scaling to full size. The laboratory operates several drone aircraft—including quadrotors and a fixed-wing aircraft with expandable payload capacity—to rapidly prototype, test, and refine new concepts. Recent missions show the method in action: the FireSense project deployed a NASA sensor on a drone to gather weather data during a wildfire in Alabama, helping firefighting agencies predict smoke movement and allocate resources more effectively. Another project, called EPIC, air-launched instrumented parachutes from a drone to test designs for Mars missions. The team also tested an automatic collision-avoidance system that's now saving lives in military jets. By accelerating learning through rapid, small-scale testing, these experiments pave the way for breakthroughs across aeronautics and exploration.
