GOES-19 Goes Down, NOAA Investigating

NOAA's newest weather satellite went offline and remained stuck in safe mode, per Hackaday's Thursday report. GOES-19, launched in June twenty twenty-four, is one of four operational satellites providing forecast data and severe weather monitoring for the Western Hemisphere—specifically the continental United States, Central and South America, and the Atlantic Ocean. The timing is precarious: the failure occurred during Atlantic hurricane season, and concurrent smoke from Canadian wildfires is drifting over the Northeast. The bright side: GOES-16, an older operational satellite launched in twenty sixteen, can serve as a backup covering GOES-19's area. Though older, it's the same design and in good health, so weather forecasting should see no degradation. Still, getting GOES-19 back online remains a critical priority for NOAA.
