San Francisco orders Apple, Google to remove nudify apps from app stores

tech

San Francisco's attorney general has ordered Apple and Google to pull so-called nudification apps from their app stores. Ars Technica reports that David Chiu sent cease-and-desist letters this week targeting thirteen such apps, which can transform ordinary photos of real people into explicit images without consent. Chiu's letters warned that the companies were violating California laws prohibiting services that create deepfake pornography. It sets up a direct challenge over how much responsibility app stores bear for the tools they distribute.
