Humphrey the M5 Camel in East Bower, England
other
A fiberglass camel named Humphrey has stood in a field beside England's M5 motorway for more than twenty-five years, drawing such fan mail from commuters that postcards can be addressed simply to 'The Camel, M5 Junction twenty-three and twenty-four.' According to Atlas Obscura, the sculpture was created in the nineteen eighties by West Country farmers for a local carnival, then became a tradition: whoever married next received Humphrey for their garden. When the final farmer in the group wed, Humphrey remained in place—and has since become a motorway icon, recently reappearing alongside a smaller companion sculpture named Bernard. Together, the pair now keep watch over the motorway.
