Deconfliction and disarmament: Can both be pursued in Lebanon?

According to Al Jazeera, Lebanon is exploring a new deconfliction mechanism designed to prevent a return to all-out conflict in the country and region. The key question: can Lebanon achieve both immediate de-escalation and longer-term disarmament? Deconfliction—technical measures to reduce the risk of accidental military clashes—is often a first diplomatic step. But moving from preventing immediate war to actually reducing arms is far more difficult. Success depends on whether all parties see benefit in both approaches: keeping the peace now, and committing to arms reduction later.
