Egypt could join Pak-Saudi-Turkiye defence pact once technical issues resolved, says Turkish foreign minister

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Egypt may join a newly formed defense alliance between Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, pending resolution of certain technical matters. Per Dawn, the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed Friday in the Saudi city and mirrors NATO's Article 5—an armed attack on any member is treated as an attack on all. Fidan explained that while the agreement establishes mutual defense, the specific forms and scale of support would be determined through consultation when requested. He emphasized the pact is not directed against Iran or any other nation, but serves as a collective pledge to support member security. Egypt, already functioning as a partner on defense matters, is the natural next candidate for membership once technical hurdles are resolved.
