New catalyst with 75% less platinum promises to reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel cells

Per Phys.org, researchers at IMDEA Materials Institute have developed a hydrogen fuel cell catalyst containing seventy-five percent less platinum while delivering comparable performance to conventional platinum catalysts. They achieved this by applying controlled mechanical compression to the material, which restructures it at the atomic scale to match pure platinum's energy efficiency. The findings, published in Electrochimica Acta, address a major cost barrier to broader hydrogen fuel cell adoption.
