The July 2005 rainfall-induced landslides in Yangshan (the Yang Mountains) in China

Extreme rainfall over the Yanshan Mountains in Hebei Province, China, triggered widespread landslides and debris flows in late July of 2025, killing more than sixty people. Eos reports that a new study measured rainfall totals near five hundred fifty millimeters in the worst-hit areas, with single-day totals topping two hundred eighty millimeters. Researchers who examined one badly hit village found the debris flows drew on abundant loose sediment, and concluded that human alterations to the slopes, including terracing, roadcuts, and construction, had made the terrain more susceptible to failure. The findings point to a need for closer scrutiny of how slope modification interacts with intensifying rainfall in mountain regions.
