Artificially-rotating system reflects radiation like a black hole

Physics World reports that researchers at the City University of New York have created a coin-sized circuit that behaves as though it's rotating at enormous speed without physically spinning. The team fed radio waves with a special twist into their device and found the reflected waves amplified by as much as six times. This is the first observation of rotational super-radiance with electromagnetic waves, a phenomenon predicted fifty years ago by physicist Roger Penrose. The trick was using artificial rotation by electronically modulating the circuit's properties—a method that can even theoretically exceed light speed, since nothing material actually moves.
