Former Syrian leader Assad sentenced to death in absentia over war crimes

A Syrian court has sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, RFI reports, convicting him of atrocities committed during the country's civil war. Six of his closest aides received the same sentence. The ruling comes as Syria continues reckoning with the legacy of a conflict that spanned nearly a decade and a half.
