Many US public parks sit surprisingly close to hazardous waste sites and facilities that release toxic chemicals

Per University of Michigan researchers, a new study published in Scientific Reports examined more than 151,000 U.S. public parks for proximity to hazardous chemical facilities. The research found that many parks overlap with old toxic waste sites or sit close to active facilities in the EPA's Toxics Release Inventory and Superfund sites. The findings reveal that parks designed for recreation can sit adjacent to sources of toxic chemical exposure.
