Deadly heatwave choking France

France is getting some relief from Europe's deadly heatwave as the weather system drifts eastward. According to France 24, fewer French departments are on maximum alert as of Saturday—less than half, down from two thirds the day before. But healthcare systems remain under strain. The Paris region has activated emergency hospital protocols, while local authorities have banned evening alcohol sales and public gatherings and cancelled or postponed events across the country. Beyond the immediate crisis, the heatwave has laid bare deeper problems: schools closing, hospitals and nursing homes without adequate air conditioning, and persistent questions about the government's long-term climate preparedness.
