The American Psychiatric Association is planning to integrate neurobiology into the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, commonly known as the DSM. As The Conversation tells it, the manual has historically relied on behavioral syndromes rather than objective biological measures because the science of mental illness has lagged behind other medical fields. The updated guide aims to incorporate evolving research on genetic risk factors, immune system markers, and brain-related proteins to move psychiatry closer to a model of precision medicine.
