Meta settles states' child-safety claims for $18B; Florida rejects deal as "peanuts"

Ars Technica reports that Meta has agreed to settle child-safety claims with nearly every US state for eighteen billion dollars. Under the settlement, which requires court approval, Meta will impose new restrictions on people under eighteen: a default two-hour daily time limit across Facebook and Instagram that only a parent can disable, a default block on access between midnight and six a.m., a school mode that mutes notifications from eight a.m. to three p.m., and notifications after every fifteen minutes of continuous screen time. The settlement represents a significant reduction from some states' original demands, which exceeded one point four trillion dollars. Florida, however, rejected the deal, calling it 'peanuts.'
