Ratko Mladić is still viewed as a hero by many Bosnian Serbs. It’s a reminder how divided my country remains today

Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb general convicted of war crimes, has died this week in a prison in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence handed down in twenty seventeen. Mladić commanded the Bosnian Serb army during Bosnia's 1992 to '95 war, a conflict that killed more than one hundred thousand people and included the Srebrenica genocide, where at least eight thousand Bosniak men and boys were killed in July nineteen ninety-five. According to The Conversation, his death has stirred painful memories among survivors even as many Bosnian Serbs, including young people born after the war, took to the streets to celebrate him as a hero — a divide the piece says still defines Bosnia today.
