Phys.org reports that an international team of more than one hundred scientists has taken a major step toward unlocking the secrets of diatoms, some of Earth's tiniest but most important organisms. The sequencing project found striking genetic differences among these microscopic algae. Diatoms are a type of phytoplankton that produce a significant share of the oxygen we breathe.
