MIT News reports that a new theory from scientists at MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory proposes cognition and consciousness emerge from analog computations performed by traveling brain waves. The researchers argue that rhythmic neural activity coordinates millions of neurons far faster than the slower chemical rewiring of synapses, using wave dynamics that act like mobile stencils to guide faster gamma oscillations. Because brain waves can be modulated non‑invasively, the team sees an opportunity to develop treatments that target wave dynamics, including for conditions such as autism. The authors say their next step is to look for direct signatures of analog computation in brain‑wave patterns, to test the theory in future experiments.
