Earthquake in Peru leaves at least five dead

world

The Guardian reports that a magnitude five point five earthquake struck Peru's Andes region on Saturday night, killing at least five people. More than twenty others were injured and around three hundred have been displaced after buildings collapsed near the city of Sicaya, in Huancayo province, authorities said Sunday. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter sat just west of Sicaya at a shallow depth of about ten kilometers — shallow tremors like this tend to shake the surface harder, compounding the damage to homes in the mountainous region.
