Papua separatists kill American pilot in ‘message’ to US and Indonesia

world

An American pilot has been killed by separatist rebels in Indonesia's Papua region. According to the Guardian, Nicholas Gosselin was shot dead and his civilian plane was set on fire in Yahukimo, in Highland Papua province. The West Papua National Liberation Army, a militant group seeking independence, claimed responsibility and framed the killing as a message to the United States and Indonesian governments. The attack reflects the long-running but largely overlooked conflict in the region, where separatist fighters have been battling Indonesian forces for years in their struggle for independence.
