Spyware used against MEP investigating Pegasus abuses, report finds

world

NSO Group's Pegasus spyware was used to target a member of the European Parliament while investigating Pegasus abuses, according to researchers at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto. Stelios Kouloglou, a Greek MEP, had his device compromised after joining a parliamentary committee examining the surveillance tool's widespread misuse. Researchers couldn't attribute the attacks to any specific government operator, but found they matched patterns from earlier campaigns against exiled Russian and Belarusian journalists. The case highlights an unsettling paradox: those investigating spyware abuse become targets of spyware abuse themselves.
