Middle East crisis live: US launches new wave of strikes on Iran; Tehran says attacks render diplomacy ‘futile’

The United States and Iran have again traded heavy missile and drone strikes, with Tehran targeting American facilities across Gulf states and declaring the strait of Hormuz closed once more. The Guardian reports that US Central Command launched a fresh wave of strikes at five p.m. Eastern on Sunday, saying the goal was to keep degrading Iran's ability to attack commercial ships transiting the strait. Iran has sought to impose a permanent fee system in the waterway and warned vessels not to sail without its authorization. Tehran says the attacks render diplomacy futile.
