St. Stephen's Day Storm Memorial in Budapest, Hungary
world
In Budapest, a colorful folk-art plaque marks the site of a deadly disaster along the Danube. According to Atlas Obscura, during the city's St. Stephen's Day celebrations in 2006, a freak thunderstorm with one hundred kilometer-per-hour winds flooded the riverbanks, killing three people and injuring at least two hundred fifty others. A tree was first planted to mark the spot, but that tree itself came down in a storm two years later, injuring pedestrians and causing two more deaths. It was eventually replaced by the current, less hazardous memorial, whose oddly placed face and vivid style are the signature of its creator, Boldiszár Kö.
